Day 4 : Using Integers to indicate directionDescription: Using integers to show direction
Objective: The purpose of this exercise is to realise that integers are used to show direction. If a question asks 'How far up' a positive answer means up, and a negative answer means down. Similarly for North and South etc.

When we use negative values, we often use them to mean the opposite direction to what we were talking about.

So to say -4 less than is another way of saying 4 more than

And to say -8 meters forward is another way of saying 8 metres backward.

This is very useful when we have a formula to figure out e.g. how far above ground we are.

If we want our answer to be above ground, we can use negative values to show a distance below ground.

If we want our answer to be how many people got on a bus, we can use negative values to mean how many people got off the bus.
