Objective: The purpose of this exercise is to remember that a percentage is a fraction. When dealing with profit or loss, this is a fraction of the original price. And then converted to a percentage by multiplying by 100.

In these questions we are asked WHAT percentage profit or loss I made.  A percentage means write as a fraction and when talking about profit or loss this is a fraction of the original price.

What percentage…?

  1. Means write what you have as a fraction and convert to a percentage.

  2. A profit means how much money you made.

  3. A loss means how much money you lost.

  4. What percentage profit (or loss) means write that profit (or loss) as a fraction of the original price and convert to a percentage.

What percentage profit…

I buy a bike for €40 and sell it for €60

What was my percentage profit?

1) What was my profit ? Ans: €20

2) Write this as a fraction of the original price

 

 

3) And convert to a percentage

= 0.5 x 100

= 50%

What percentage profit…

I buy a bike for €40 and sell it for €30

What was my percentage profit (loss)

1) What was my profit (loss) ? Ans: €10 (loss)

2) Write this as a fraction of the original price

 

 

3) And convert to a percentage

= 0.25 x 100

= 25% (loss)

= -25%
